WHAT IS THE COURAGE PRINCIPLE?

The Courage Principle is the continued practice of using courage as a proposition so that it serves as the foundational ingredient of your leadership ethos.

WHY COURAGE?

In June of 2019, my team and I put together our first-ever Equity Over Everything community event, which was a Juneteenth Celebration in Asheville. We figured that Juneteenth was the perfect time to introduce our initiative and to start a conversation in the community about equity.

I stacked the panel to reflect our key priorities, which are social equity, entrepreneur-ship, and homeownership. Two of the panelists who were supposed to show up in order to represent homeownership did not, and so my mentor and I took their seats.

I sat on the panel and smiled out at the audience, thinking: We did it! Our first event was packed out, and it feels really good to be off my feet. The moderator, who just so happened to be my son, asked “What can be done to make our town more equitable?

In preparation for the event, I imagined seas of smiling, proud black faces celebrating our progress. This was because, in my limited experience, I had only ever seen ma-jority black-attended Juneteeth celebrations. In case you didn’t know, Juneteenth is the oldest known holiday that celebrates the ending of slavery in the United States. The reality was at this event, there were some black faces in the audience, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a hodgepodge of multicultural faces who happened to be CEO’s, entrepreneurs, non-profit board leaders and even major donors in the room celebrating the ending of slavery with us-with me.

When it was my turn to speak, I glanced over the room, and said something to the effect of “Let’s just take a moment, and look around the room. This is one of the most beautiful Juneteenth celebrations I have ever been to.” I then posed the question, “What if we don’t have a big equity problem, but a courage problem?” I could see the confused looks on their faces. I asked, “Is it okay if I ask you all a few quick questions?”
